Premier Li Keqiang met with Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, president-elect of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on July 4 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Premier congratulated Bande on his election. He said that the UN has played an irreplaceable role in safeguarding world peace, promoting global development and upholding international cooperation since its establishment over 70 years ago.

Next year marks the 75th anniversary of the UN’s founding, for which China supports UNGA in preparing and launching commemorative activities, said the Premier, adding that this will be significant for sustaining multilateralism, sovereign equality, settling disputes through peaceful means, and other principles endorsed by the UN.

He said that China, as a founding member of the UN, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and the largest developing country, will continue to uphold an international system centered on the UN, and adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China will work with other countries to deepen international cooperation, maintain international fairness and justice, jointly face challenges, and build a community of shared destiny for mankind, the Premier added.

Bande said he appreciates China’s huge support for the UN. As UNGA president, he will firmly support multilateralism, safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and support member states in settling disputes through consultation.

He will perform his duties in a fair and just manner, and strengthen communication and enhance coordination with China, Bande added.

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended the meeting.
